No visit to Louisville is complete without a visit to Churchill Downs — the most famous racetrack in the world.

Racing fans easily recognize the Twin Spires of Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby since 1875. The Run for the Roses is always the very first Saturday in May.

The 2009 fall meet begins Nov. 1. For both the spring and fall meets, gates open at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. The first post is at 12:45 p.m. Gates open at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, with the first race at 2:45 p.m. At other times of the year, visitors can wager on simulcast races from across the country. Check the Calendar for times and details.

Visitors can also make a special day of their visit to Churchill Downs by renting one of the private Jockey Club suites for a day. Pricing begins at $886 for 12 guests and includes a full, open bar and menu in the luxurious suite. (Additional guests are $65 each.) See the races the way the celebrities do!

In the second-floor Clubhouse, fans can watch the races at the Silks Lounge. Guests can order drinks and food in this non-smoking lounge, which offers an "All Day Every Day Happy Hour" featuring $2 hotdogs, cocktails, soft drinks and popcorn.

Next door to Silks is the Champions Sports Lounge, home of Hoops & Horses on Saturdays. Champions offers the best of college basketball, including NCAA tournament coverage in March.
