Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom: still quite a thrill
For years, Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom billed itself as "the Thrill Park" and backed its boast with screaming rides like Chang, its signature stand-up coaster; the award-winning wooden coaster Thunder Run, and two dozen other rides, from mild to wild.
The adrenalin rush is still there. But this year, in the park's 11th season, some of the best thrills may be on stage.
Among the artists scheduled to perform in the new Starburst® Summer Concert Series are teen star Raven Simoné of the Disney Channel's That's So Raven; Miranda Cosgrove, best known as character Carly Shay on Nickelodeon's iCarly, and Grammy Award-winning tobyMac.
Other attractions headed to the park this year will be announced later. The summer-concert series will offer a variety of musical genres, including pop, rhythm & blues, country and Christian. Keep checking Kentucky Kingdom's online Events Calendar for times and dates.
Concerts are included with park admission. Standard one-day general admission is $40 for those over 4 feet tall, $25 for anyone shorter, and free for those 2 years old or younger.
Tickets bought through the park website are $25 apiece. The best bet for many may be a season pass, available online for $45 and good for the year at Kentucky Kingdom and all other Six Flags theme parks.
Park admission also includes the Splashwater Kingdom water park, one of the largest wave pools in the country. It's open late May through Labor Day.
A water-park highlight is the Deluge water coaster, which uses rocket-propelled water, magnets and gravity to blast riders through high-bank turns, tunnels and hills. Also delivering heart-pounding action is the Tornado, where you'll drop 7.5 stories into a 132-foot long water funnel, then navigate through 5,000 gallons of churning water.
Or just relax with a peaceful float down winding Castaway Creek. But get ready for a soaking when you pass through by Geyser Island and Confusion Canyon.
The kids will enjoy Buccaneer Beach, with its giant tipping coconut and assorted falls, squirts and slides, and Hooks Lagoon, where they can brave a 40-foot-tall water slide or get soaked by a 1,000-gallon bucket.
