Bird-watching exhibit opens at Falls of the Ohio State Park
Published: Apr 20, 2009
The Interpretive Center of the Falls of the Ohio State Park welcomes a new exhibit on birdwatching. This is the second exhibit that is part of the year-long celebration of the bicentennial of naturalist, ornithologist and artist John James Audubon's arrival to Louisville, Ky., in 1808.
The new exhibit, Eye on Birds, runs through Aug. 2. It explores bird watching and introduces visitors to this popular hobby, including an explanation of the tools necessary to birdwatch and the best ways to attract interesting birds to their gardens.
The exhibit is illustrated by extraordinary, up-close photographs of many species of birds at the Falls of the Ohio. You can view some of these riveting pictures taken by local photographer Garrick Fields by clicking here.
The exhibit is included with the price of admission to the Interpretive Center.
Audubon, born in Haiti and reared in France, came to the United States in 1803. He studied American birds, learned much about them and painted them in the most realistic manner ever up to that date.
In 1808, Audubon settled in Louisville until moving further west to Henderson, Ky., in 1810. Audubon's Birds of America, containing hand-colored watercolor illustrations of more than 700 species of North American birds, first published in 1827. (Printed copies are still being sold today.) A first edition of Audubon's Birds of America in excellent condition sold for $8.8 million in 2000.
