Kentucky Kingdom offers real thrill: 900 jobs
Andrea Scrogham may be graduating from high school this May, but she's going to spend the summer working at the same place as last summer: Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom.
The work environment is good for a teenager, "and the money definitely helped out," she said.
Andrea will be one of more than 900 seasonal workers this summer at the amusement park, which calls itself the state's largest employer of young adults. Kentucky Kingdom's annual job fair will be from noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20.
Especially at a time of scarce jobs, the seasonal employment provides a bonanza of employment opportunities for both teens and adults.
"More teenagers apply than adults, but we are currently looking for applicants of all ages. We are a great choice for moms, teachers, second-wage earners and the young at heart," said Kentucky Kingdom communications director Carolyn McLean.
Jobs will be available in ride operations, food service, games, retail, entertainment, aquatics, guest relations, admissions and human resources.
Andrea, 17, a senior at South Park TAPP, was a rides attendant last summer, helping patrons onto and off of various rides. "They moved us around from ride to ride."
Paid internships are also available in areas such as marketing, finance, food service and hospitality.
There will also be career-oriented adult positions in security, information systems, revenue control and loss prevention. Six Flags offers a flexible temp staff for those who just want to fill in open shifts.
Wages begin at $7.25 an hour with increases based on department and job title, McLean said.
Teens or others without autos can take advantage of the TARC bus line, which drops off in front of the employee entrance.
About 650 positions will be filled for the park's spring season, which begins April 24. Peak employment will reach 900 for the summer. Seasonal jobs end Oct. 31.
Returning employees get first crack at the positions, with special re-hire job fairs geared for them.
Employees must be at least 16 years old and should understand that jobs may require work on weekends, evenings and on spring and summer holidays, McLean said.
Applicants are encouraged to apply on-line first at www.sixflagsjobs.com and then arrive at the job fair at the park in the the Kentucky Exposition Center. Dress for the fair is business casual — no jeans or sweats.
Entertainers looking for professional experience will audition separately at a later date. Anyone with questions may call (502) 375–0992 or 1–800–SCREAMS.
