Lolita's: big burritos for big appetites
Got a really big appetite for something Mexican? You need a really big burrito – the kind that you get at Lolita’s Tacos.
A Louisville favorite since it opened at 422 Poplar Level Road 16 years ago, Lolita’s brings customers back with hot platters of south-of-the-border dishes served quickly and in generous portions.
Owner Juan Murillo moved Lolita’s to Louisville from its original home in Los Angeles, and the restaurant still promises “L.A. style Mexican food.” What does that mean? “Real beef,” Murillo said, not cheap cuts shredded or ground into hamburger – though Lolita’s will serve tacos made with ground beef if customers prefer.
While portions are large, prices are moderate. Tacos are $1.65 apiece, while a carnitas taco, with chunks of pork, onions, tomatoes and cilantro rolled in a soft corn tortilla, is $2.50. Two beef enchiladas, rolled in a corn tortilla and smothered in enchilada sauce and melted cheese, are $4.95. Two tamales, either beef, pork or chicken wrapped in corn meal inside a corn husk, are also two for $4.95.
The lowest-priced burrito is the bean-and-cheese model, available for $3.89. Lolita’s top seller, according to Murillo, is the Burrito Grande at $5.39, but any of the other burritos, covering most of a dinner plate, will seem grand to a typical diner and should satisfy nearly any appetite.
Other $5.39 burrito choices include the beans and rice, beef and bean, beef and cheese, beef and rice, egg and chorizo (sausage), as well as the tamale burrito, the taquito burrito, avocado burrito, carnitas burrito, and several others.
You can make your burrito enchilada style (soft and covered with enchilada sauce) for $1 more. One dollar will also buy you beans or rice in any burrito, and the $8.59 combination plates include a hefty serving of beans, rice and chips.
If your tastes run more to traditional American fare, Lolita’s also offers French fries ($1.89), chili cheese fries ($5.29), nacho cheese fries ($3.95) hot dogs and corn dogs ($1.89 each), or a bowl of chili ($2.49.) Be aware that drink refills are 50 cents. Corona’s are $2.75, and American beers are $1.85.
