Biography:
Gathering in a studio to record their long anticipated indie debut in their hometown of Floyds Knobs, Indiana—just across the Ohio River from Louisville, where they’ve dominated the rock scene these last few years—the four members of Red Saturday reflect upon the musical influences and life experiences that have gone into creating their gritty and aggressive, lushly melodic modern rock sound. “Though we’re in our 20s, we were all heavily influenced by Led Zeppelin, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Pink Floyd in addition to the rock heroes of our childhood like Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam and Sublime,” says Andrew Morrison. Andrew’s brother Tyler, the band’s drummer, who on occasion adds his classical training on cello into the eclectic sound says, “It’s a real mix of modern and vintage.” In the seven years since high school pals, charismatic lead vocalist Drew Hoffer, lead guitarist/backing vocalist Troy Stiller and brothers Tyler and bassist Andrew Morrison joined forces, their evolving set list has electrified audiences at hundreds of clubs, concert venues and festivals throughout the Midwest. This includes playing for thousands on a bill with hot National acts at Rockin’ at The Waterfront and playing the Headliners Music Hall and Jillian’s in Louisville, The Exit Inn in Nashville, The Lodge in Clarksville, Tennessee and Electric Lady in Madison, Indiana. When their album is finished and singles start shipping to commercial radio, thousands of listeners in Louisville will be there immediately to light up the request lines. Over the last few years, their songs “Wish For Yesterday” and “Lifting Me” became hugely popular ..1 staples on 105.1 WLRS’ Kentucky Fried Radio Hour, a slot devoted to hometown talent; “Lifting Me” was ..1 for over 15 weeks straight. Though the final tracking for Red Saturday’s debut album is still in the works, several of the band’s most popular songs are locks to make the cut—the crunchy and aggressive pop rocker “Taken,” the trippy, mid-tempo “Apathy,“ which Drew says, “it is a song about becoming more in touch with humanity,” acoustic driven, “Stay,” and “The Circle,” where Drew’s lyrics delve into the understanding of peer pressure. A swirl of heavy tribal drums and symphonic elements surround the emotionally intense lyrics of “Daddy’s Little Girl,” which were inspired by an article Drew read in Rolling Stone about a “perfect” prom queen gone bad. Drew says of his lyrics, “I like to write ambiguously, meaning that I write them in a way they can be easily misunderstood, the listener can draw their own conclusions.” “Our music is a journey of self exploration for us as we try to find the meaning in the struggle within ourselves to understand life,” says Tyler. “We see the music we make as a soundtrack to our own lives. When we first got together as teenagers, we were passionate about the music but way too young to know what direction to take it. So it’s about the process of finding ourselves and what we need to say. We see music and life as basically the same thing, all emotion and full of unexpected twists and turns.” “Our music is constantly evolving, just like life,” he adds. “It’s beautiful at times, ugly at other times, and exciting to figure it out along the way.” One of the elements that takes Red Saturday’s music beyond the realm of most guitar-driven, rock bands is the classical cello training of both Morrison Brothers. “Our classical training gives us an incredible perspective on music,” says Tyler. “We have a lot of colors and layers in our arrangements that a lot of rock groups don’t have.” Andrew, Troy and Tyler formed their first band with Troy’s brother as the lead singer. After a few years of playing school gigs the trio invited Troy’s fellow choir member, Drew, to jam. “Drew didn’t know what he was about to embark upon,” says Troy, “ I remember the way he used to warm his voice up before class. His style was totally what we were looking for, such a powerful voice.” Tyler adds, “We played through some stuff and it felt really good. We made the decision that we had to have Drew in the band. We were all going in the same direction, so why not just make it official. That was the start of Red Saturday.” The band got its name from a university study the guys read about that associated specific colors with certain days of the week; naturally, Saturday was red. “Red’s a good color for feeling and emotion, and for things that are both intense and mysterious. Over the years, we’ve added more colors and layers to the music and production, so our name took on even more meaning,” says Tyler. Already wildly popular in and around their home state, the name Red Saturday will soon be more than a regional phenomenon.
