When the lights go on and the curtain goes up, the Hardin County Playhouse pulls a magic trick, turning friends and neighbors from across Elizabethtown into hilarious Roman citizens, participants in the 1925 Scopes “Monkey” Trial, cabaret performers during the rise of Nazi regime and even a Kansas farm girl far from home!
For 40 years, the Hardin County Playhouse has provided riveting dramas, sparkling musicals and side-splitting comedies in Elizabethtown, located just 45 minutes south of Louisville. For the last few years, the award-winning theater company has performed in the Plum Alley Theatre, nestled on the northwest side of the Elizabethtown State Theater. Recent productions include the Pulitzer Prize-winning Doubt; Agatha Christie’s classic Ten Little Indians, Inherit the Wind; the new romantic comedy Almost, Maine; the Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy Harvey and the farcical A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, which won the 1962 Tony Awards for Best Musical and Best Book.
Recently, the Hardin County Playhouse’s production of Wit, Margaret Edson’s searing Pulitzer Prize-winning drama, won six awards at the Kentucky Theatre Association’s Theatre Festival in Lexington, KY, including Best Play, Best Director (Bo Cecil) and Best Actress (Dee Corkran).
At a time when a ticket to a live theater production can cost a day’s wages, prices at Hardin County Theatre performances are a downright steal! Tickets are $13 for children, senior citizens 55 and older, members of the military and those coming in groups of 10 or more; other adults pay just $2 more. You can buy tickets online or by calling (270) 351-0577.
