The Louisville Ballet: World-Class Ballet in the Bluegrass State
With great leaps into the air, sylph-like ballerinas and rousing music, a night at the Louisville Ballet engages with its sights and sounds. From cutting-edge modern programs such as Adam Hougland’s Cold Virtues to refreshing takes on traditional ballets such as The Nutcracker, the Louisville Ballet has long been one of the United States' premier ballet companies.
Among the company's favorite full-length ballets are Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, Coppelia, Romeo and Juliet, Cinderella, Giselle, Don Quixote, Anna Karenina and The Three Musketeers. In addition to the regular subscription series, Louisville Ballet presents The Brown-Forman Nutcracker each holiday season.
Doubling the audience's pleasure, most of the Louisville Ballet's performances are accompanied by the Louisville Orchestra.
The great Mikhail Baryshnikov danced with the Louisville Ballet during the 1978–79 and 1979–80 seasons. It is the only regional ballet to have had that honor.
The Louisville Ballet reaches nearly 50,000 people annually with its performances and serves as the state ballet of Kentucky. Since its formation in 1952, the Louisville Ballet has hosted 65 world-premiere ballets. The Louisville Ballet School, which currently has nearly 400 students, opened in 1975 and has trained dozens of dancers who have gone on to professional careers.
Tickets are available online, by calling (502) 584–7777, or in person at the Kentucky Center for the Arts box office, Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m.
The Louisville Ballet welcomes field trips to special performances at Whitney Hall in the Kentucky Center for the Arts. Tickets are $10, while chaperones are free.
