Westport Village: Eclectic Shopping in a Cozy Community

Westport Village — with its clusters of shops, pleasant lanes and half-timbered Tudor architecture — brings a charming shopping enclave to Westport Road between Herr Lane and Lyndon Lane. Located in what was once the down-at-heel Camelot Shopping Center, Westport Village can best be described as the un-mall. The open-air development resembles a British village more than a looming concrete behemoth. And Westport Village boasts no huge chain-store anchor, such as a Dillard's, a Macy's or a Sears store.

Instead, the teeming shopping center is home to mostly locally owned restaurants, shops and boutiques. And like a real-life village, Westport Village has special events, including festivals, wine and food tastings and art shows, to amuse visitors.

Westport Village contains some long-established Louisville businesses, such as Hubbuch & Company, which has provided architectural services and interior design in the River City since 1933, and the law firm of Conliffe, Sandman and Sullivan, formed in 1964. And the retail shopping complex is home to an East End Glassworks Gallery, a showroom for the delicate and artistic handblown creations crafted by national and international artists that the downtown Glassworks is known for.

But most of the shops are trendy, eclectic newcomers that appeal to 20- and 30-somethings, such as Amazing Green Planet, a family-owned shop dedicated to environmentally friendly products and books on going green; The Trail Store, which sells hiking and camping apparel, gear and accessories; and Croquis Boutique, which sells mid- to high-end women's clothing and accessories.

A few chain stores and franchises dot Westport Village, such as a Curves Fitness, the women-only health club; a Summer Classics store, which sells its own line of high-end garden furniture; a Moda Men's Store, a casual-clothes shop that sets its young professional male clientele at ease with free wi-fi, a bar and a pool table; a Gattiland (left over from the Camelot Shopping Center days) and a Qdoba Mexican Grill.

Westport Village has seven other restaurants, including the popular Napa River Grill and breakfast and lunch eatery Wild Eggs. Others are Macca's Florida Seafood Grill & Bar, Hiko-a-Mon Sushi Bar and Fish Market, Indigo Joe's Sports Pub, La Vida Java Coffeehouse and Jade Palace, which also dates from the Camelot Shopping Center days.

Westport Village also houses some services, including the Elements Therapeutic Massage and a Norton Immediate Care Center.
