2011 Great Balloon Glimmer Lights Up Waterfront Park April 28
An expected 3,000 people will watch as hot-air balloons glow and light up the sky at the U.S. Bank Derby Festival Great Balloon Glimmer on Thursday, April 28, on the Great Lawn at Waterfront Park. The Glimmer is a smaller scale version of the U.S. Bank Derby Festival Great Balloon Glow, which takes place the very next night at Bowman Field.
The Glimmer — just one of five balloon events being held during the Great BalloonFest from April 28 through April 30 — kicks off the Kroger Fest-a-Ville on the Waterfront and the Chow Wagon. The main event, the U.S. Bank Derby Festival Great Balloon Race, is scheduled to begin early on Saturday, April 30.
As with the better-known Balloon Glow, at the Glimmer the balloons inflate in their launch position but don't ascend into the sky. The fire in the balloons' burners cause the hot-air balloons to glow against the night sky, with live music broadcasts by Lite 106.9 WVEZ as accompaniment.
