The U.S. Bank Derby Festival Great Balloon Glow, occurring in 2011 on April 29, provides an opportunity to see the color and majesty of the hot-air balloons up close and personal. The Great Balloon Glow is a companion event on the day before the U.S. Bank Derby Festival Great Balloon Race, which is scheduled for the next morning. The balloons inflate in their launch position on the field, but don't ascend into the sky. The fire in the balloons' burners cause the hot-air balloons glow against the night sky, with a special musical score to serve as a backdrop.
“Even if you plan on coming to the race, you don't want to miss the unique beauty of the glow,” says Great Balloon Glow Chairman Louis Waterman. “It's a one-of-a kind experience!”
Visitors can wander Bowman Field and admire the hot-air balloons and even speak to their pilots. More than 50,000 attend annually.
The Balloon Glow is free for those with a Pegasus Pin. Parking at Bowman Field is $5 per vehicle, and only cash will be accepted. Gates will open at 6 p.m.
