Kentuckians have always known that Secretariat was perhaps the best racing thoroughbred that history will ever know. But now, thanks to Disney, the whole world knows it, too.
The Kentucky Derby Museum is doing its part to express the story behind Disney’s new film, Secretariat: The Impossible True Story, to vivid life like only Churchill Downs can do. The museum’s latest exhibit, Secretariat: Big Red’s Journey to the Silver Screen, explores the exciting career of the 1973 Triple Crown winner and the real-life history behind the blockbuster movie.
Movie and horseracing fans alike will not want to miss this special exhibit, which includes several items on loan from Disney. The exhibit showcases costumes from the film, like Diane Lane’s cream-colored dress and jewelry from the Kentucky Derby scene; the suit worn by John Malkovich; and racing silks from the Derby scene.
An original copy of the script features handwritten comments from Secretariat’s owner, Penny Chenery (played by Lane). Visitors to the exhibit can view an extensive collection of video from the film, ranging from behind-the-scenes footage filmed on-set to movie trailers and interviews with Chenery and several of the actors.
But it’s not all just about the movie. The exhibit also highlights memorabilia from the real life of Secretariat, including authentic trophies from the museum’s collection that were featured in the film; video footage of Secretariat’s races; and interviews with the people involved in Secretariat’s rise to equine celebrity.
Kids will appreciate the dress-up exhibit, giving them a rare opportunity to experience the couture of the day from the '70s, when Secretariat captivated the world's imaginations and secured its singular spot in history.
HelloLouisville Tip: The exhibit is on the second floor of the Derby Museum and is included in the regular museum admission price. The exhibit runs until March 27, 2011. Click here to learn more before visiting.
