Learn the story of the early days of the Home of the Innocents ( then Louisville's Episcopal orphanage) and of the 220 children buried at Cave Hill Cemetery without a marker of any kind at a free story tour June 19.
The Home of the Innocents was established in 1880. The orphanage's first deaconess, Sister Emily Cooper, and the children who were her charges have been forgotten since then. The Home of the Innocents is now a provider of residential- and community-based services to children of any faith who have been abused, abandoned or neglected.
The Home of the Innocents and the nonprofit Community Foundation of Louisville are spearheading a community service project to erect two bronze statues to the memories of the forgotten children in two of Cave Hill Cemetery's older lots, Lots 225/227 and Lot 692 in Section A.
Those wishing to go on the story tour should meet at Cave Hill's main office. The 45-minute tour will be by car. (Most Cave Hill Cemetery tours cost $25 and last 90 minutes.)
Make reservations for the tour by noon June 18 by calling Linda S. Speed at (502) 585-4649, extension 1015, or by e-mailing lindas@cflouisville.org.
