Clean up Silver Creek in Clarksville, Ind., July 25

Join other volunteers in cleaning up Silver Creek and Lapping Memorial Park in Clarksville, Ind., on July 25.

The Knob and Valley Audubon Society is sponsoring the annual two-hour clean-up in the park, which is just north of Louisville. Lend a hand in removing trash and debris from Silver Creek's banks. Volunteers should meet at 10 a.m. at Lapping Park's shelter house. Wear old clothes, but latex gloves will be provided. Rain or shine, the Silver Creek clean-up will go on!

Volunteers will be rewarded with pizza and door prizes. While volunteers of all ages are welcome, those 13 or younger must be accompanied by an adult.

About a third of the 1.5-mile moderate hiking trail in Lapping Park winds along Silver Creek. Silver Creek begins in Scott County, Ind., and the stream flows 34 miles before emptying into the Ohio River.

The historic stream marks the boundary between Clark and Floyd counties and was once a popular site for duels between Kentuckians, as dueling was illegal in Kentucky. The most famous involved statesman and U.S. senator Henry Clay in 1809.
