If a Florida vacation just isn’t in the budget this summer, Elk Creek Vineyards is bringing the beach party to Kentucky July 23 with the Conch Republic Band. So make plans to visit one of the Bluegrass State’s most picturesque wineries, sip some excellent chardonnay or cabernet sauvignon, and jam with the South’s most lively tropical rock band as they perform popular tunes from Jimmy Buffett, the Zac Brown Band, Beach Boys and more.
Elk Creek Vineyards claims that Kentucky was the site of America’s first commercial vineyard, established in 1798 by the Marquis de Lafeyette. While most Kentuckians would have probably assumed bourbon came first, it’s not hard to imagine a French marquis finding the rolling hills of Central Kentucky the ideal spot for a vineyard.
Fast forward 213 years, and Elk Creek is making delicious red and white wines just an hour’s drive from Louisville, Lexington and Cincinnati. Elk Creek offers a complete experience for visitors, including tours, tastings, a café, art gallery and bed and breakfast at the Elk Creek Lodge. The vineyard also offers live entertainment just about every Friday and Saturday night from 5-8 p.m., but check the website before heading over.
Elk Creek’s popular outdoor concert series that takes place each summer has featured the Beach Boys, Blake Shelton and Three Dog Night. This year, they’ll welcome the Conch Republic Band, a Lexington-based group that was named Top Beach Band by GigMasters.com. Conch Republic has played venues ranging from Margaritaville in Key West to Cheeseburger in Paradise and the pre-Buffett concert show in Cincinnati. The band brings the beach to Kentucky with a high-energy show that quickly inspires a packed dance floor.
So grab your grass skirt, coconut bra and wine glass and head to Elk Creek this summer. For more information, visit the Conch Republic or Elk Creek Vineyard on Facebook or www.elkcreekvineyards.com and www.conchrepublicband.com.
