'Darkness' paranormal conference draws ghost adventurers

Some of the biggest names in the paranormal world are coming in May to one of the top locations for paranormal investigations: Louisville’s Waverly Hills Sanitarium. And you can join the adventure.

Zak Bagans, Aaron Goodwin and Nick Groff, hosts of the Travel Channel’s “Ghost Adventures,” will highlight the fourth annual Darkness Radio paranormal conference and ghost hunt in Louisville May 2-4. It’s sponsored by Darkness Radio, a Minneapolis, Minn., talk-radio show that focuses on paranormal news and interviews.

Joining the “Ghost Adventures” crew for the three-day event will be Dave Schrader and his radio co-host Mallie Fox; Chris Fleming, star of the British paranormal reality television series “Dead Famous,” which searches locations reputedly haunted  by celebrities; Shannon Sylvia, a former member of the SyFy Channel’s “Ghost Hunters” team; "EVP specialists" Mark and Debbie Constantino, a husband and wife known for success in recording "Electronic Voice Phenomena" believed by some to represent spirit communication; paranormal investigator and author Jeff Belanger; and Andy Coppock, who designs equipment for use in detecting ghostly activity.

“We’ve got some great people coming in,” said Schrader, whose lively radio shows enjoy a national following through streaming broadcast and podcast distribution.  According to Schrader, Waverly, too, enjoys a national reputation among paranormal enthusiasts, and is often cited as one of the “most-haunted” locations in the country, along with places such as the Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia, and the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colo.

The radio host said he always enjoys coming to Louisville and Waverly Hills. It was there that he first experienced what he believed to be a ghostly apparition and has encountered intriguing evidence of paranormal activity on each trip to the massive building. “I’m looking forward to seeing what Waverly has in store for me this year,” he said.

Schrader stressed that the celebrities at his event are available to meet and mingle with guests throughout the event. They don’t just deliver lectures, but “chat and hang out with you in the lobby.”

The gathering’s conference activities will be at the Holiday Inn–Louisville Airport, 447 Farmington Ave ., beginning with presentations by guest speakers from 7-8 p.m. May 2, followed by a meet-and-greet with the “Ghost Adventures” crew and other guests.  Conference lectures are scheduled from 1-6 p.m. Monday, May 3, and from 3-6 p.m. Tuesday, May 4.

Ghost-hunting visits to Waverly Hills, with celebrity guides, will be Monday and Tuesday nights. One night of investigation is included in the $225 per person conference registration fee, along with the meet-and-greet. Tickets for the meet-and-greet only are available for $49.  To register, go to the Darkness Radio events website or call (763) 432-0754.
