The Frankfort Avenue Easter Parade has long been an American tradition, when families come out to show off their Easter finery and meet the world’s most famous rabbit. Held each year the day before Easter, the 2011 Frankfort Avenue Easter Parade will be Saturday, April 23 in Louisville's Crescent Hill neighborhood. Easter is quite late this year, so expect a warmer-than-usual spring day for this fun family event.
This colorful parade will feature antique cars, marching bands, dance teams, horse-drawn carriages, Shriner buggies, floats, martial arts demonstrations, and lots of families decked out in their Easter bonnets. This is one of the few parades in Louisville that accepts pets, so expect to see plenty of boxers in bunny ears and rottweilers wearing rabbit tails.
Perhaps the best part (at least for kids), is an appearance by the Easter Bunny and the loads of free candy that will be distributed along the parade route.
The parade begins in front of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in the heart of Crescent Hill, and will continue towards downtown Louisville for about a mile and a half until reaching Haldeman Avenue in Clifton. Spectators are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and stake a spot anywhere along the route. The parade begins at 11:30, and it typically arrives at the end of the route by about noon.
The event is completely free, even for participants. Those wishing to join in the parade should arrive at St. Mark’s at 2822 Frankfort Avenue no later than 11 a.m. to get in line. Larger groups and floats are asked to contact the Frankfort Avenue Business Association in advance at (502) 419-6159.
