ENID: Generations of Women Sculptors

The Carnegie Center for Art and History, just across the Ohio River from Louisville in New Albany, Indiana, is currently featuring an exhibit of sculptural art titled, ENID: Generations of Women Sculptors. The sculptures are the work of a Louisville, Kentucky-based collective of female artists known as ENID.

The name is taken from that of the first recognized female sculptor from Louisville, Enid Yandell. Yandell (1869-1924) successfully competed against male artists of her period, winning many important commissions. Notably, she worked on the famous 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition (and World Fair) in Chicago.

But, you can also find her works right here in Louisville. A trip to Cherokee Park in the lower Highlands will reveal two of her better known local pieces, the bronze “Daniel Boone”, and her 1905 artwork “Pan (Hogan’s Fountain)”. Yandell went on to become a member of the National Sculpture Society, the oldest organization of professional sculptors in the United States.

In 1998, a group of local female artisans formed a collective to promote their own sculptural works. They decided to also promote the memory of their pioneering predecessor by naming their group ENID, in honor of Yandell. Today, the collective shows its work throughout the Ohio Valley region. Members’ ages range from 33-88 years with several members having varying levels of education, from self-taught sculptors through those with graduate degrees.

The current exhibit at the Carnegie Center includes works by 15 different ENID members. Media ranges from metal to bone to paper, and even to chewing gum. If three-dimensional art interests you, then drop by this free showing while it lasts through April 29, 2011.

Notable dates for up-close and personal experiences with the artists include:

April 7, 7-8 p.m. -- Gallery talk with ENID co-curators and artists. Free.
