Some people may feel that running is, well, for the dogs, but at the upcoming Waggin' Trail 5k Run/Walk, it really is. The 17th annual Waggin' Trail 5k Run/Walk benefits programs at the Kentucky Humane Society (KHS), the oldest animal agency in Kentucky and the largest animal welfare organization in the state.
Held at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer Park, the Waggin' Trail event will draw hundreds of animal-lovers for the race and other family-friendly activities. Low-cost microchipping will be available, along with behavior and agility demos, vendor booths, contests, food and more. And, the "Adoption Option" parade will showcase special KHS pets in need of permanent homes.
Competitive runners can compete for fastest male and female awards, but KHS encourages people at any level of ability to come out and enjoy a stroll, with or without a pet, through the scenic park.
Fundraising opportunities are available for the event in several ways. Registration fees for the race help support KHS, but participants also are welcome to raise donations as well; they can utilize an online fundraising system allowing donors to contribute via the internet. Those that raise funds for the event are eligible for prizes.
The Waggin' Trail 5k event takes place Saturday, May 21, at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer Park. On-site registration begins at 8 a.m. for runners, with the race beginning at 9 a.m. Walker registration begins at 9 a.m. and the fun walk begins at 10 a.m. Race registration is $25 and includes a T-shirt.
Vendor booths and kids' activities will begin at 9 a.m., with entertainment, food and demos available at 9:30 a.m. Top runner awards will be presented at 9:45 a.m. and top fundraiser awards at 11 a.m.
Event registration and more information is available online. To learn more about the KHS, go to its website or call 502-366-3355.
