Take the kids on a bug safari, paint a pumpkin or create your own scarecrow, all at Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest this fall.
Admission to Bernheim is free during the week. However, most major events are held on weekends, when the charge is $5 per vehicle. The park is located 25 miles south of Louisville in Clermont, Kentucky.
Bernheim will be buzzing with excitement in September when the park holds its annual BugFest. The event features an insect safari as well as other games, music and dancing. During the hands-on activities, children can handle insects and gain a better understanding of the world of creepy crawly things. They also can participate in making crafts, learning how bees provide honey -- and even will be given a chance to eat bugs. BugFest will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, September 17.
Also this fall, Bernheim will host its annual fall festival, ColorFest. The two-day event allows the entire family to get out and enjoy the spectacular fall colors. There will be plenty of food and music, and activities will include hikes, guided walks, pumpkin painting, hay rides, crafts, nature discovery stations and Kentucky craft artists. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, October 15, and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, October 16.
Bernheim’s Scarecrow Jubilee runs October 15 to November 30. This family-oriented outdoor exhibition is designed to connect individuals with nature and inspire nature-related experiences. Families, individuals, community groups, scout troops, schools, businesses and others are invited to create and display a unique scarecrow for this event. Go to Bernheim's Scarecrow Jubilee webpage for guidelines and more information on how to participate.
