Kids tired of traditional summer day camps — sports, camping, swimming and the like — can indulge their passion for science through three day-camp programs at the Falls of the Ohio State Park.
The Young Explorer Day Camps allow campers to learn about science and history by exploring the habitats at Falls of the Ohio State Park and the hands-on exhibits inside the Interpretive Center.
The five-day camps are $80, and the sole four-day camp is $60. The five-day camps are June 1–5, June 8–12, June 22–26, June 29–July 3, July 13–17 and July 27–31. The four-day camp is July 21–24.
Students in first through third grades attend from 1 to 4 p.m., while students in fourth through sixth grades go from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Another option is the Young Paleontologist Day Camp, designed for kids ages 9 to 14 who want to learn what it would be like to be a paleontologist. Campers will learn about the billion-year history of life on Earth by studying fossils.
On July 7–8, parent or guardian must transport the child to the field collecting sites for the camp, which usually runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The registration form must include a hand-written paragraph explaining why the child wants to attend. Camp dates are July 6–8, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the fee is $80.
The last option is the Young Archaeologist Day Camp, aimed at campers ages 11 to 15 who are interested in archaeology. They'll study man-made artifacts in activities led by members of the Falls of the Ohio Archaeological Society. A parent or guardian must transport the child to the archaeology digging site and remain with the child on the camp's last day.
Camp dates are July 9–11, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the fee is $80. Day camps are sponsored by The Falls of the Ohio Foundation and State Park Interpretive Center. To register for a day camp, e-mail dani@fallsoftheohio.org or call (812) 283-4999.
