Festival of Trees & Lights kicks off holiday season
Ready to deck the halls? The holiday season gets an early start in Louisville with the unofficial kick-off taking place at the 2010 Festival of Trees & Lights at Slugger Field, November 12-14. Get in the holiday spirit with this jolly event for the whole family, featuring holiday celebrations from the Christian, Jewish and Kwanza traditions.
Shoppers will delight in the variety of decorated trees, homemade holiday wreaths, handcrafted decorations and gifts available for purchase. The sweet shop will offer a selection of locally homemade goodies, and kids from 6 to 86 won’t want to miss the extensive Christmas miniature model train display. Additional kids' activities will include ornament making, face painting and decorating gingerbread houses, plus pictures with santa.
The festival also includes the Dickens Family Night on Friday night, when costumed characters from Charles Dickens’ classics will entertain and interact with guests. Families will think they’ve stepped into Scrooge’s shoes in A Christmas Carol, or are witnessing scenes from Oliver Twist or Great Expectations (at least the happier, more festive scenes).
The Festival of Trees & Lights was first held in 1989 as an event to raise funds for Kosair Children’s Hospital. The event has grown tremendously over the past 21 years, and now hosts more than 10,000 holiday revelers each year. The festival is presented by Republic Bank, and proceeds will benefit Kosair Children’s Hospital neonatal intensive care unit.
The Festival of Trees & Lights will run Friday, November 12 from 10 am-5 pm with the Dickens Family Night that evening from 6-9 pm; and on Saturday, November 13 and Sunday, November 14 from 10 am-6 pm. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children under 12.
