The highlight of Derby festivities-- at least for little girls across the Bluegrass -- is the Fillies Children’s Tea with the Derby Festival Princesses. The third annual tea will be held on April 17 at the Seelbach Hilton in downtown Louisville. Diminutive princesses and even a few little princes look forward each year to the tea, where they will meet five real-life princesses – Derby Festival Royal Princesses, that is.
The Derby Festival Princesses host a formal tea for the children with finger sandwiches, cookies, a selection of teas and china tea sets. Then kids get to enjoy some play time with a variety of fun activities and games, plus a fashion show. Kids love the one-on-one attention by the glamorous Kentucky belles, and moms love the special photo opportunities that result.
This year’s Derby Festival Princesses include Caitlin Carter, a junior at Western Kentucky University; Katie Huber, a graduate student of the University of Louisville’s School of Medicine; Trisha Maclin and Laura Don Oliver, both seniors at the University of Louisville; and Lauren Smith, a senior at the University of Kentucky. They serve as ambassadors throughout the Derby Festival, and together will attend almost 70 events over the three-week festival. Each princess receives a $2,000 scholarship for participating.
The Fillies Children’s Tea is organized each year by The Fillies, Inc., a local 52-year-old charitable group that works with the Derby Festival to coordinate the tea, the famous Fillies Derby Ball, and the selection of the princesses and crowning of the Derby Queen at the ball.
The Fillies Children’s Tea will be held from 1-4 p.m. at the Seelbach. Tickets for this year's event have sold out -- and that happens nearly every year, so plan on getting your tickets for the 2012 event as soon as you can.
