The University of Louisville Theatre is presenting the premiere of "How Orisanmi Chose His Head," a play written and directed by playwright Nefertiti Burton as part of UofL's Department of Theatre Arts African American Theatre program.
"'How Orisanmi Chose His Head" is a work taken from ancient Yoruba sacred poem which explains how newborns receive their names. The play tells a tale of spirits who travel to Earth to be born as humans, and how decisions they make influence their character and experiences in life.
The play will feature colorful costumes and exotically designed sets. Drumming and dancing also are focal points of "How Orisanmi Chose His Head," as both play a major role in the traditions of the Yoruba people.
“This story is the source of my son’s name. When he was little I shared it often with other children and families,” Burton said. "They had no idea that it was anything more than a delightful folktale, but the moral lessons and vivid imagery appeal to the imagination and spirit. After 30 years I’m thrilled to bring a fully staged version to the public.”
Burton is an associate professor of theatre at UofL and associate dean for international, diversity and outreach programs in UofL’s College of Arts and Sciences. She has performed and directed in local, national and international venues including: Boston, Massachusetts; New York, New York; Winston-Salem, North Carolina; Adelaide, Australia; Beijing, China; and Grahamstown, South Africa. Burton's screenwriting and directing have been acknowledged with an American Scene Award and an Audelco Award, respectively.
