“The End” is near: The apocalypse and what might come after is the subject of this collaboration of five playwrights that will be performed by Actors Theatre of Louisville’s Acting Apprentice Company. "The End" will run from March 18 through April 3, 2011.
From the Book of Revelation to “2012,” prophecies about the end of days have existed since the beginning of time. In “The End,” these five playwrights, all of whom have had work produced in previous Humana Festivals, envision scenarios ranging from a zombie infestation to a bunker beneath a high school:
Dan Dietz is a Jerome Fellow at The Playwrights’ Center in Minneapolis whose work has also been presented at The Guthrie Theater, The Public Theater and The Kennedy Center. Other plays include “tempOdyssey,” “Americamisfit,” “The Sandreckoner” and “Clementine in the Lower Nine.”
Jennifer Haley founded a network of theater artists, the Playwrights Union, in Los Angeles, where she lives. Her work has been presented at Contemporary American Theatre Festival, Summer Play Festival in New York and the Lincoln Center Director’s Lab. Other plays include “Neighborhood 3: Requisition of Doom” (2008 Humana Festival), “Breadcrumbs” and “Froggy.”
Allison Moore, whose previous Humana Festival plays, “Slasher” (2009) and “Hazard County” (2005), have been produced multiple times around the country, is currently developing a pilot with Warner Bros. Television and the CW.
A. Rey Pamatmat contributed to the 2007 Humana Festival play “The Open Road Anthology.” His full-length play “Edith Can Shoot Things and Hit Them” is making its premiere at the 2011 Humana Festival.
Marco Ramirez, has had two 10-minute plays produced in the Humana Festival, both of which also received the Heideman Award. His work has also been produced at The Kennedy Center and The Juilliard School, among others. He is a writer for the FX television series “Sons of Anarchy.”
Twenty-two acting apprentices will perform “The End” under the direction of Michael Legg and Amy Attaway. Actors Theatre’s apprentice/intern company, in its 39th year, is one of country’s oldest pre-professional resident training companies.
The Humana Festival of New American Plays at Actors Theatre of Louisville is a nationally renowned theater festival that has introduced more than 400 plays into the repertoire, three of which have won the Pulitzer Prize: “The Gin Game,” “Crimes of the Heart” and “Dinner with Friends.” The festival, which is underwritten by the Humana Foundation, is an opportunity to see what’s coming next in theater and mingle with emerging playwrights and critics and producers from across the country.
