Humana Festival lights up stage through March 28

Join theater lovers from around the world to catch five full-length plays and four 10-minute productions at the 34th annual Humana Festival of New American Plays at Actors Theatre of Louisville. The festival runs from Feb. 21 through to March 28.

The internationally acclaimed festival has birthed more than 400 plays. Past Humana Festival plays have gone on to win Pulitzer Prizes or receive regional theatre productions across the country and off-Broadway.

This year's world premieres range from the more traditional fare to the avant garde:

  • Sirens by Deborah Zoe Laufer, a comedy about surviving the empty nest.
  • Phoenix by Scott Organ, about a one-night stand that lasts and lasts
  • The Method Gun by Kirk Lynn, which analyzes the life of acting coach Stella Burden
  • Fissures (lost and found) by Steve Epp, Cory Hinkle, Dominic Orlando, Dominique Serrand, Deborah Stein and Victoria Stewart explores how imagination and memory interplay — for better and worse
  • Ground by Lisa Dillman, in which a woman faces hard choices about keeping or selling her family's farm on the Mexican border
  • The Cherry Sisters Revisited by Dan O'Brien recounts the true-life comedic tale of sisters who made it big in vaudeville by being big of heart, if short of talent
  • Heist! was conceived and created by Sean Daniels and Deborah Stein and written by Deborah Stein; in the light-hearted play, art thieves threaten to ruin the debut of a long-awaited masterpiece by a reclusive master

Check the online Humana Festival Calendar for dates and times. You can buy tickets at the box office, by calling (502) 584–1205 or online.

The four 10 minute plays are Let Bygones Be by Gamal Abdel Chasten, a zydeco-tinged exploration of progress and its price; Lobster Boy by Dan Dietz, in which a boy seeks to cure his brother; Post Wave Spectacular by Diana Grisanti, which traces the limits of sisterly concern; and An Examination of the Whole Playwright/Actor Relationship Presented As Some Kind of Cop Show Parody by Greg Kotis, in which a playwright and his actors dissect a disappointing play. The two performance dates for the 10-minute plays are March 27 at 9 p.m. and March 28 at 4 p.m.

Actors Theatre also has special getaway packages that include hotel discounts. Check the New Play Getaway page on the theater's website or call Sarah Peters at (502) 585–1210 for details.
