
Jefferson Memorial Forest, located just 15 miles from downtown Louisville, is offering summer camps with lots of hands-on fun. With a canopy of trees above and lots of engrossing activities below, children will gain knowledge amidst the forest’s natural beauty.
At these day camps aimed a youngsters aged 7 to 12, children can immerse themselves in the natural world. Campers will be able to take on the roles of naturalist, scientist and explorer in a summer adventure they will remember for a lifetime! Camp activities include nature study, crafts, science experiments, games, journaling, hikes and animal contact with Jefferson Memorial Forest’s education animals. Each session runs for one week.
Forest Adventures, offered June 7–11 and July 12–16, allows campers to trek deep into the forest, climb the alpine tower and learn such survival skills.
Creature Trekking, offered June 14–18 and July 19–23, allows campers to explore different habitats and learn about the creatures that live there. Campers travel through the forest, across fields and meadows and into streams. Kids will learn what to look for when tracking animals.
Aquatic Habitats, offered June 21–25 and July 26–30, lets campers discover the exciting world within a pond, lake, stream and river. Campers explore a lake while canoeing, hike to a winding stream, collect specimens in nets and then view the tiny creatures on a videoscope. Life preservers provided. Parents are welcome to join their child for canoeing field trips.
The above camps cost $115, which includes all camp supplies, a Jefferson Memorial Forest water bottle, a T-shirt and a snack. Checks are payable to “Jefferson Memorial Forest.”
For campers aged 8 to 11, Time Travelers: Adventure to the Past with Riverside, Farnsley-Moremen in July reveals how, long ago, Native Americans lived in Kentucky’s forests. Campers even get to attend an archaeological adventure to find real artifacts belonging to the pioneers who settled on the banks of the Ohio River. Camp begins at Jefferson Memorial Forest Horine Reservation for July 6 and 7. Then drop-off and pick-up will take place at Riverside, Farnsley-Moremen for July 8 and 9. This more intensive camp costs $175.
Jefferson Memorial Forest even has something to offer the smallest fry. Five and six-year-old kids will enjoy Forest Explorers, offered June 28–July 2, as they search for animal tracks, discover the fascinating world of insects, find life in a small scoop of pond water, and hike the trails! Through stories, crafts and hands-on activities your child will make discoveries about the variety of habitats and the animals living in the Forest. Come explore! Unlike the other camps, this camp lasts from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The cost for this camp is $105.
