Kentucky Center Presents The Teddy Bear's Guide to the Orchestra

Exposure to the arts can open a new world to a child, and the Kentucky Center for the Arts provides that exposure with The Louisville Orchestra's presentation Saturday, March 26, of the Teddy Bear's Guide to the Orchestra. The Brown Theater in the Kentucky Center is the setting for experiencing an orchestra with the wonder of a child.

With several pre-concert activities, this final program in the orKIDStra series allows every bear-clutching participant a unique concert experience according to Heather O'Mara, Louisville Orchestra’s media relations manager. The pre-concert activities start at 10 a.m. with the concert to follow.

The Louisville Zoo will have a table detailing its soon-to-open polar bear exhibit. Besides the polar bear artifacts on display, the Louisville Zoo staff on hand will be giving out its “Backyard Action Hero” booklets.

The Louisville Free Public Library will have books on teddy bears and real bears, and if you bring a canned food item for the Dare to Care project and register, you  might win your own Conductor Bear from donated by Build-a-Bear.

In other areas, kids and parents will have a chance to explore their musical talents. The Louisville Orchestra will have a composer station where kids can put music notes on a staff and a musician from the orchestra will perform the piece they have composed. Then, the motivated musician-to-be can go to where Gist Piano will have keyboards for the kids and adults to play.

“This concert was conceived and assembled by our own staff,” explains O’Mara. The program was inspired by the Benjamin Britten’s Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra which teaches children the different instruments that comprise an orchestra. Clara Harris, a.k.a. Clara Bear, will narrate the program. Clara Bear will be in the lobby greeting guests as they interact with the pre-concert activities.

Other orchestral pieces on the program range from Mozart’s "Overture to the Magic Flute" to John Williams’ “Harry’s Wondrous World” from the film "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone."
