Kentucky Opera's new season will delight audience members with some of opera's favorite works.
The opera company kicks off the 2010 season with a pair of tragic one-act operas, "Cavalleria Rusticana" and "I Pagliacci," on Sept. 24 and 26. The season continues with Gaetano Donizetti’s comic opera "The Elixir of Love" on Oct. 22 and 24 and concludes with Giacomo Puccini’s beautiful "Madame Butterfly" on Nov. 19 and 21.
In "Cavalleria Rusticana," the first opera composed by Pietro Mascagni, an adulterous affair in a Sicilian village between a returned soldier and a flirty bride leads to tragedy. In "I Pagliacci," by Ruggero Leoncavallo, the extreme jealousy of a commedia dell'arte clown leads to murder. One of the 20 most-often performed operas in North America, "The Elixir of Love" relates the story of a credulous peasant who comes to believe that a love potion can win him the local beauty. Lastly, "Madame Butterfly," over three acts, recounts the ill-fated marriage between a callous U.S. naval officer named Benjamin Pinkerton stationed in Japan and his beautiful and faithful bride from Nagasaki, Butterfly. You can read synopses of each opera and listen to musical excerpts here.
