The annual Light Up Louisville festival is one of the city's biggest holiday attractions. Light Up Louisville features tons of events--shopping, craft workshops for kids, live music, a parade, and a visit by Santa--all culminating in the lighting of the Jefferson Square Park Christmas tree.
Light Up Louisville kicks off at 3 p.m. with "Run Run Rudolph" a 5K Run/Walk through Downtown Louisville. However, if exercise isn't your thing or if your goal for the day is to get your holiday shopping finished, you might check out the goods in the Light Up Louisville holiday shopping area also opening at 3 p.m. Crafts and other hand-made and local gifts will be on sale from a variety of vendors.
Kids will love building toys like the elves in Santa's Workshop from 3 to 7 p.m. Once the toys have been assembled, you'll want to run out to catch the holiday parade starting at sunset. The parade travels west on Jefferson to Fourth Street, north on Fourth to Main, and east on Main to Eighth Street. Don't forget to bring folding chairs or a blanket and dress warmly.
You'll know the main event of the evening is about to begin after Santa arrives at 8:30 p.m. At 9 p.m., Jefferson Square will become an explosion of holiday lights, music, and fireworks.
HelloLouisville Tip: If you can't make it to Light Up Louisville, all is not lost. The holiday lights at Jefferson Square Park stay lit through New Year's Eve, so you can view the lights after dark any night during the holiday season. Additionally, on the hour every evening from 6 to 10 p.m., you can catch the 14-minute light show "Music, Magic, & Lou-minations: A Fantasy in Lights."
