For a little more than a month of every year, the Louisville Mega Cavern shuts down its normal tours for a show of holiday lights known as Lights Under Louisville, a 17-mile underground driving tour of the Louisville Mega Cavern holiday lights display.
Unlike the regular Louisville Mega Cavern tour where you're chauffeured through the cavern in a truck, visitors to Lights Under Louisville drive their own vehicles. With headlights off and radios tuned to a specific station, drivers follow a line of cars through huge holiday light displays that dance to the tune of the music playing over the radio.
If one of your family traditions is driving around town looking for the best holiday light displays, you'll want to take your family to Lights Under Louisville this year. From Christmas trees to candelabras, holiday-themed lights cover every corner of the 17-mile driving path. And though the $25 per carload fee can seem steep, it's probably not that much more than what you would spend on gas driving through neighborhoods around town hoping to find great holiday light displays.
When planning your trip, keep in mind that it doesn't have to be dark in order to enjoy the light displays at Lights Under Louisville; the cavern provides all of the dark you'll need. Arrive while it's still daylight out and avoid long lines and heavy traffic.
HelloLouisville Tip: In 2010, visitors to Lights Under Louisville on Sunday through Thursday can get $5 off of their admission with a coupon from Fifth Third Bank or Wendy's.
