Help preserve the planet by participating in one of Louisville’s Earth Day celebrations. Although the official 2011 observance falls on Friday, April 22, Louisville Earth Day celebrations will take place throughout the month of April, with at least one related event scheduled in May.
Party for the Planet is the Louisville Zoo's month-long celebration of the earth. Among the zoo’s eco-activities is a compost and mulch sale to help people prepare their gardens for spring and a $2 discount off Sunday admission prices during April when you donate an old cell phone to the zoo’s recycling effort. Visitors can also get $2 off admission on Saturday, April 23, when the zoo will hold its Earth Day Festival.
To take a more active role in the celebration, check out E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park's cleanup effort on Friday, April 22. Throughout the day, the park’s staff, environmental groups and area businesses will be on hand to mark the occasion. Scheduled activities include hikes to the vernal pond, a dumpster dive, a live animal demonstration and a geocaching demonstration.
For those seeking a passive listening role, plan to attend the Fourth Annual Mighty Kindness Hootenanny, an eco-festival scheduled for Saturday, April 23, at the Louisville Nature Center across from the Louisville Zoo. Reel World String Band, Papa Stampley and White Russians will be among the musical performers. The event showcases local farms, green businesses, local art and homemade goods. Activities will include free yoga, square foot gardening workshops, a film festival, children’s activities and a massage-a-thon.
Several Louisville Free Public Library locations will host Earth Day events for children on Saturday, April 23. Registration is recommended. The library's southwest branch, 10375 Dixie Highway, will offer storytelling, snacks and a craft made from recycled materials. The main library, 301 York St., will offer bug stories and a project for ages 3-11. The Newburg branch, which features geothermal heating and cooling, a rain garden and solar power, will also offer special activities.
The Falls of the Ohio State Park will hold an Earth Day event May 14 with live animals and family oriented activities.
