The third annual “Girl Power Day” event, hosted by Louisville Girls Leadership, will be Sunday, April 17, 2011, from 2-4 p.m. The event takes place at the Heine Brothers Coffee Shop on Longest Avenue, across from Mid City Mall on Bardstown Road in Louisville’s Highlands neighborhood.
According to Louisville Girls Leadership, a group dedicated to the advocacy of young women, “Girl Power Day” will celebrate 'the inherent capacity of girls everywhere to change the world in which they live through advocacy and action.' Attendees also will see the group's new rap video which features Julie Smith, a co-host of "View from the Ville," a local entertainment and talk show shown Saturdays at 4:30 p.m. on WKYI-TV.
This event also will launch the new “Girl Power Bar” from Cellar Door Chocolates; the bar is made of goji berries, cacao nibs and dark chocolate. Event organizer and local attorney Holly Houston said the bars will be sold for $4. Girl Power Day t-shirts also will be sold.
While at the event you can write a message on a balloon for an upcoming balloon empowerment launch. There also will be the opportunity to sign a petition to secure the ratification of CEDAW (Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women), the United Nations' treaty to end discrimination against women worldwide.
There will be treats provided by Ramsi's Café on the World and Heine Brothers Coffee and live music to entertain all that attend. For more information contact Holly Houston at hollyh@win.net.
