If mid-December rolls around and the holiday spirit still hasn’t set in, here’s an event that will get even the grumpiest humbug fa-la-la-ing. The Louisville Youth Choir has announced its popular holiday concert will take place on December 17 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.
A Christmas Festival, performed by 100 of the region’s most gifted young singers, is a traditional choral celebration of the Christmas story set amidst St. Patrick’s festive holiday décor. The group will perform a mix of traditional Christmas music from around the world, ranging from intricate pieces in other languages to American favorites.
The Louisville Youth Choir is known for fostering and promoting the talent of singers as young as first grade all the way through high school. More than 100 talented young singers from over 50 schools in Louisville and six surrounding counties perform in the choir. In its 44th season, the choir is made up of four children’s ensembles: Primary Choir of 1st-3rd graders, Chorale of 4th-9th graders, Les Chambres of 6th-12th graders, and the Kantorei advanced group of 8th-12th graders.
The concert is one of five that the choir will perform during the school year. In its 44th season, the choir joined the Louisville Orchestra in christening the new KFC Yum! Center at a private gala on Oct. 14, two nights before the Eagles gave the first public concert. The children have also performed in Europe, Canada, Carnegie Hall in New York City, and in venues around the country.
A member of the Greater Louisville Fund for the Arts, the children are Artists in Residence at Sacred Heart School for the Arts. Tickets are $13 for adults, $10 for seniors (55 and over) and $5 for students. For ticket information, call 502-896-5859 or visit the Louisville Youth Choir's website.
