Louisville Zoo seeks dedicated docents

If you know a lot about things with wings or beasts that prowl and growl, the Louisville Zoo wants you.

The zoo, at 1100 Trevilian Way, is enlisting new recruits for its army of docents — volunteer teachers who work with the Louisville Zoo Education Department. Docents help teach school groups, day camps, answer questions from zoo visitors and conduct educational outreach presentations in the community.

Anyone interested should attend a docent orientation session either Thursday, July 9, or Saturday, July 11, at the MetaZoo Education Center from 9 a.m. to noon, according to a zoo media release. The Louisville Zoo currently has more than 165 volunteer docents, and several will talk about their experience during the orientations.

Docents receive extensive training, which includes 50 hours of in-depth lectures, behind-the-scenes tours, keeper talks and hands-on activities. There is a $60 fee to cover the cost of training, a docent manual, T-shirt and a badge.

Pre-registration is required to attend the orientations, and docents must be at least 18. Contact Louisville Zoo Assistant Education Curator Doug McCoy at doug.mccoy@louisvilleky.gov or (502) 238-5343 to register.
