Storybook redhead Madeline will pay a visit to the Louisville Zoo this month to help celebrate its 40th anniversary.
The brave and outgoing French girl first appeared in print in 1939, the brainchild of Ludwig Bemelmans. Madeline has been a hit with youngsters ever since in a continuing book series (Bemelmans' grandson writes the sequels), movies and television shows.
Now the precocious pipsqueak will help with the fun at the Louisville Zoo's Family Twilight Beach Party from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, July 17, according to zoo spokeswoman Kara Bussabarger.
Beach parties are held at the Calistoga Splash Park at Glacier Run and Walkabout Café. The zoo will cut admission price to $5 per person after 5 p.m., July 17, compliments of National City Bank (now part of PNC.) Members will enter free, as usual, and zoo exhibits will remain open until 8 p.m.
Children can participate in birthday games like "pin the candle on the cake," "birthday cake piñata" and "pass the present" — the zoo's version of "hot potato." Cameras are welcome.
The zoo's next Family Twilight Beach Party will be on Aug. 21 and will feature Pablo from Nickelodeon's Backyardigans.

As the books say, "That's all there is, there isn't any more."
