Maxwell, a pioneer in developing the neo-soul style of rhythm-and-blues music, will perform at the Louisville Palace July 13.
Maxwell is planning a trilogy of albums that will spell out "Black Summers' Night." The first album of the trilogy, Black, is being released in July. The countertenor began performing songs from the album last fall: "Pretty Wings," "Bad Habits," "Never Do W/Out You," "Help Somebody" and "Cold."
Maxwell, the son of Puerto Rican and Afro-Caribbean parents, has been nominated four times for a Grammy Award. He released his debut album, Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite, in 1996. Maxwell designed it as a romantic concept album like the kind Maxwell's inspiration Marvin Gaye cut in the 1970s. The sound was so retro that Columbia Records wouldn't rease the album for two years. But Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite went gold, as did Maxwell's second album. His third and fourth albums went platinum.
