The Tony award winning musical “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” will mark the final production of the 2010-11 season for CenterStage at the Jewish Community Center of Louisville. The show opens May 12 at Linker Auditorium and will run through May 22.
Inspired by the farces of the famous Roman playwright Plautus, the Broadway smash hit is suitable for audiences of all ages. “Forum” tells the story of Pseudolus, a slave who tries to gain his freedom by helping his young master, Hero, woo Philia, the courtesan next door. But Philia is already promised to Captain Miles Gloriosus, so Pseudolus schemes up a plan to let Hero catch Philia’s eye. When the plan is foiled, Pseudolus enlists the help of the head slave, Hysterium, to restart the plot.
Monty Fields, Kyle Braun and Jessica Adamson are among the cast members who have worked hard to meet the comedic challenge of the slapstick comedy, according to CenterStage Artistic Director John R. Leffert.
“They keep me laughing every night in rehearsal,” Leffert said.
Written by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, “Forum” opened on Broadway in 1962. The play was brought to the big screen in 1966 before being revived on stage in 1972 and again in 1996 with Nathan Lane as Pseudolus. The musical features such popular songs as “Comedy Tonight,” “Love, I Hear” and “I’m Calm.”
“A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” runs for two weeks with 7:30 p.m. performances on May 12, 14, 16, 19 and 21; and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. performances on May 15 and 22. Tickets are $18.
Twenty $10 rush tickets are available for weekday and Sunday evening performances. They must be purchased in person at the Jewish Community Center by 5 p.m. on the day of show.
