You don't have to be Roman Catholic to delight in Nunsense, the international musical comedy hit that comes to Music Theatre Louisville from July 16 through July 25 — but it sure does add to the enjoyment!
Faced with the death of 52 of their fellow nuns from food poisoning, the resourceful Little Sisters of Hoboken turn to a variety show in the Mount Saint Helen’s School auditorium to raise the funds for their sisters’ funerals. You’ll delight in the antics of their mother superior, the Reverand Mother Regina, a former circus performer who hasn’t lost her love of the spotlight; streetwise Sister Robert Anne, forgetful Sister Amnesia and ever-hopeful sister Mary Leo, determined to become the first-ever ballerina nun.
And, as parochial school students have grown to expect, whenever there are nuns, there will be a quiz! Nunsense has an audience participation quiz, of course.
Incredibly popular, Nunsense ran in New York for 10 years, making it the second-longest-running off-Broadway show (after The Fantasticks). By the time it closed in New York, Nunsense had been translated into 26 languages for 6,000 productions worldwide. Dan Goggin, who got the idea from a line of greeting cards featuring witty and sharp-tongued nuns, wrote the book, music and lyrics for Nunsense.
Like its sister theater company, Stage One, Musical Theatre Louisville productions are now at the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts’ Bomhard Theater in downtown Louisville. You can view a seating map of the Bomhard Theater.
You can buy tickets to public performances online, by calling (502) 584–7777 or by visiting the Kentucky Center’s box office in person Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., or Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. Or call (502) 498–2436 to buy a season subscription.
Pricing for single tickets is adults, $25; students aged 11 through college (with a college ID), $20; seniors 60 and older, also $20; and children 10 and younger, $10. So-called “rush tickets” — sold two hours prior to curtain — are $10. Tickets are $18 each for groups of 15 or more.
The Kentucky Center offers wheelchair access on every seating and parking level. With three weeks’ notice, sign interpretation is available for patrons who are deaf or hard of hearing.
