Skip seeing Santa at the mall this year and head down to the Spirit of Jefferson for an event the kids will remember long into their adulthood. Santa will cruise the Ohio River aboard the Spirit with a small number of lucky kids and their families on Sunday, December 19, just before heading back to the North Pole to check on the elves’ progress with the toys.
The Spirit of Jefferson is the Belle of Louisville’s little sister: a 118-foot-long ornamental sternwheeler built in 1963 that holds 250 guests for harbor cruises and 150 for dining. With the charm and character of an old fashioned riverboat, the Spirit brings all the modern conveniences for wintertime pleasure cruises, like climate controlled dining decks, heating (or air conditioning), a concession stand, dance floor, on-board sound system and modern restrooms.
There are two enclosed, temperature-controlled decks with outdoor viewing areas, and one full open deck to watch the scenery slowing drift by as the boat cruises up the river. Guests aboard the cruise with Santa Claus will be treated to a lavish buffet luncheon filled with holiday favorites and kid-friendly choices. There is also a concession stand that will be available with snacks and candy, which is priced separately.
Reservations must be made at least 24 hours in advance of the boarding time, so tickets will not be available at the door. Guests should call the morning of the cruise to confirm details in case inclement weather causes any changes to the schedule.
HelloLouisville Tip: If the kids fall in love with cruising and want to come back, surprise them by putting a gift certificate under the tree this year, which is available for both the Spirit of Jefferson and the Belle of Louisville.
