Join Huckle Cat as he tours his amazing neighborhood when Busytown comes to Stage One from Oct. 6 through Nov. 13. The characters created by Richard Scarry have come to life in this musical stage adaptation by Kevin Kling.
The hour-long show depicts a day in Busytown, beginning with Sergeant Murphy's appearance with his trusty tricycle at sunrise. Throughout the day, Huckle Cat, who's planning a birthday party for Betsy Bear's grandmother, encounters dozens of characters from the special place that has delighted generations of children. The characters first appeared in Little Golden Books more than 50 years ago. Since then, more than 100 million Busytown books have been sold. The books have been translated into 30 languages, making Lowly Worm and his pals an international phenomenon.
The high-energy tunes and fast-paced action means that adults will enjoy the production as much as Busytown's target three- to six-year-old audience.
School matinee performances are 10 a.m. and noon; weekend public performances are on Saturdays, Oct. 24 and Nov. 7. On both days, the shows will be at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
You can buy tickets to public performances online or by calling (502) 584-7777. Or call (502) 498-2436 to buy a season subscription.
Teachers taking their pupils to Stage One on a field trip will find teacher resource guides for Busytown, as for every production, including lesson plans for different grade levels and aligned to Kentucky and Indiana academic standards. Teachers can reserve school matinees online or by calling (502) 498-2436 or tollfree at (800) 989-5946. The Fund for the Arts will partially subsidize field trips from Title I schools; the application is here.
The children's theater also provides pre-show workshops, custom-designed workshops and post-show discussions.
Like its sister theater company, Music Theatre Louisville, Stage One now stages its productions at the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts' Bomhard Theater in downtown Louisville. You can view a seating map of the Bomhard Theater.
The Kentucky Center offers wheelchair access on every seating and parking level. With three weeks' notice, sign interpretation is available for patrons who are deaf or hard of hearing.
