The Broadway hit The Music Man will march its way onto the stage courtesy of CenterStage at the Jewish Community Center of Louisville March 10-27. The Music Man marks the fifth production of the 2010-11 for CenterStage at the Jewish Community Center of Louisville.
The story behind the award-winning musical revolves around Harold Hill, a traveling con man who makes a living by posing as a band leader. Harold sells instruments and uniforms to unsuspecting families, then makes off with the cash. When a straight-laced librarian in River City, Iowa, named Marian Paroo discovers the truth about Harold, the story takes on a new twist. Part comedy, part love story, The Music Man has been a crowd-pleaser since its Broadway premier in 1957. It won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
The show’s cast includes more than 60 actors, led by 10-year CenterStage veteran Alex Craig (Harold Hill) and CenterStage newcomer Lauren Maxwell (Marian Paroo). “With ages ranging from just 5 years old to over 55, it creates challenges,” says CenterStage Artistic Director John R. Leffert. “But it will be rewarding to see everyone march down Main Street during ‘76 Trombones.’”
In addition to big-chorus dance numbers, the show’s musical selections include “My White Night,” “Gary, Indiana” and “Pick a Little, Talk a Little.”
CenterStage offers afternoon and evening performances. All shows take place at the Jewish Community Center of Louisville. The small theater company is noted for its creative sets and costumes, as well its high performance standards.
