Life-sized puppets, a woodwind quintet, a change of venue to a modern city and plenty of audience participation give Sergei Prokofiev’s classic a hilarious 21st century update. Don’t miss the zany performances January 22 and 23, 2011, at the Speed Art Museum of Peter and the Wolf.
The Cincinnati-based Madcap Productions Puppet Theatre will perform Saturday, January 22, at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. and on Sunday, January 23, at 1 and 3 p.m. Amazing stunts, funny adventures and enthralling music will mark these Madcap performances, which use life-sized puppets and zingy dialog.
In this version of Peter and the Wolf, young Peter lives in a high-rise apartment with his grumpy grandfather rather than in a cottage in the Russian hinterlands. His pals now include a spoiled teenage bird; a homeless duck taking shelter in a city park; and a street-smart kitty with a taste for picking pockets. Add the bullying Mafioso Wolf, who wields a mean stringed bass, to the mix, and you have a recipe for hilarity. The four friends team up to give Mafioso Wolf an offer he can’t refuse.
The music and mayhem end with audience participation and a parade through the auditorium, delighting young and old alike. It's a version of Peter and the Wolf like no other.
For Speed Art Museum members, admission to the performance is $6. Non-members pay $2 more.
