Walking with Dinosaurs: The Arena Spectacular lives up to its name: spectacular. The live animatronic show based on the immensely popular BBC television series will thunder through Freedom Hall on May 14–16.
After 65 million years, they're back! Walking with Dinosaurs features 17 life-sized animatronic, life-like replicas of the Tyrannasaurus rex, Utahraptor, Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus and more, each walking, moving and roaring. The show, on a two-year tour of North America, has proven so popular that it ranked fourth in worldwide tours in 2009. Only U-2, AC/DC and Bruce Springsteen attracted larger audiences.
The six-part BBC documentary series that inspired the show first aired in 1999. Paleontologists have checked the current show to ensure accurate information as well as fun-filled thrills. The live animatronic show first began in Australia in 2007.
In the 90-minute show, a paleontologist named Huxley guides audience members through the dinosaur's 200-million years, tracing their evolution through the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. You can watch as the dinosaurs live their daily life, stalking and fighting for survival. You'll shudder at their realistically scaly skin and their awe-inspiring roars. The Brachiosaurus measures 35 feet tall and stretches 56 feet from tip to tail! The show depicts the dinosaurs in such vivid detail you'll swear you've been hurled back in time!
The show is suitable for children 5 and older. Even so, parents should seat younger children further away from the action so that they do not get overwhelmed. In addition to being less expensive, those seats also provide a panoramic view that those sitting close up won't enjoy.
Tickets for adults cost $29.50, $39.50 and $26.50. Groups of 10 or more can get a discount by calling (502) 595–3555. You can buy tickets online, by calling (800) 745–3000 or by visiting any Ticketmaster outlets or the Freedom Hall Box Office.
