Tony Award-winning “Wicked,” which has broken box-office records in city after city, returns to Louisville in May as part of the PNC Broadway Across America series. The musical, based on Gregory Maguire’s best-selling novel, has played both on Broadway and in London's West End, as well as touring cities all over the world.
“Wicked” runs from May 5 to 23 at the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets range from $50 for a weekday matinee to $98 for the best seats in the Grand Tier of the First Balcony for a Saturday evening performance. Stephen Schwartz wrote the songs and lyrics while Winnie Holzman penned the book.
“Wicked” tells its tale from the persective of the girl who would become the so-called Wicked Witch of the West. It serves as a prequel to Frank L. Baum’s “The Wizard of Oz,” telling the backstory of the Wicked Witch and of Glinda, the Good Witch of the North, before Dorothy Gale ever arrives in Oz. The musical, which is still running, opened on Broadway in 2003 with Idina Menzel as the earnest but emerald-green Elphaba and Kristin Chenoweth as the popular but self-absorbed golden girl, Glinda. “Wicked” won three Tony Awards, including Best Actress for Menzel, and a Grammy Award.
Tickets are available online or by calling (502) 584–7777 or toll-free at (800) 775–7777. You can also visit the Kentucky Center Box Office from Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday, from noon to 5 p.m.
