Visiting the lions and tigers and bears at the Louisville Zoo is going to cost a little more starting July 1. Oh, my!
The Louisville Zoo announced June 15 that admission will increase $1 for ages 12–59, bringing the total to $12.95. The price for children 3–11 years old and seniors 60 and up will increase by 55 cents, which will push the total for both age groups to $9.50. Children 2 and under are still free.
According to the zoo’s announcement, price increases typically occur in the same year as a major new exhibit, which can add new operational expenses for keepers, animal food, programs and more not covered by the capital fundraising efforts that help finance exhibit construction.
The current price change was scheduled to coincide with the ongoing development of Glacier Run. The Seal and Sea Lion habitat at Glacier Run is scheduled to open June 30, and the zoo’s polar bears are slated to return to a new home next spring.
The last price hike came in July 2007.
A non-profit organization, the Louisville Zoo is the state zoo of Kentucky. It’s accredited by the American Association of Museums (AAM) and by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).
