Text Rain is the latest permanent installation to come to 21c Museum Hotel. The interactive installation by Camille Utterback and Romy Achituv that allows visitors to seemingly bat around letters with their own bodies.
Participants stand in front of a large projection screen, where they will see a mirrored video projection of themselves in black and white. Gently falling from the sky, like rain (hence the title), will be a color animation of falling letters. The letters respond to the participants’ motions: flitting, falling again and even liable to be “caught.” Those who remain long enough will accumulate letters along their outstretched arms or against another dark surface, sometimes enough to spell out a word or, for the very patient, the phrase from a poem, “Reading,” which deal with bodies and language.
The award-winning American-born Utterback has exhibited at galleries, festivals and museums worldwide. Her partner in the installation is Romy Achituv, an Israeli-born sculptor and media artist who now lives in Brooklyn, N.Y. He has exhibited in Israel, Austria, Taiwan, Japan, France, Brazil and, of course, the United States.
