Since 1977, when the Bristol Bar and Grille opened in the Highlands neighborhood, the casual eatery has been dishing out food with flair — so much so that the Bristol Bar and Grill has become a Louisville institution and won the Best of Louisville Award more times than any other restaurant.
Whether you’re heading to the Bristol for lunch or dinner, dropping in for a late-night bite after the theater or dancing, or treating Mom to Sunday brunch, the Bristol provides the perfect dish. The Bristol’s menu features a number of signature items, the most famous being the Green Chili Wontons with guacamole ($8.99 for a full order of the appetizer and $6.49 for a half order). Popular options for lunch include the Bristol’s gargantuan California Club Salad, in which shrimp, crab, avocado slices, olives and artichoke hearts nestle in fresh greens with a house dressing ($9.99); the Bristol Burger, served on an English muffin and paired with potato chips made on premises ($6.99); or Theresa’s Chili Linguine, a fusion dish of linguine tossed with cream and Thai chili sauce that’s then topped with blackened chicken strips ($8.99).
Dinner patrons will love Bristol’s Classics, like the New York Strip with Henry Bain sauce, a piquant sauce invented right in Louisville ($21.99), served with a baked potato; chicken fajitas ($9.99); the grilled Rainbow Trout ($15.99) or Pork Dijonnaise, served with skillet-fried potatoes ($14.99). Or they can fall back on that Louisville favorite, the Hot Brown, an open-faced turkey sandwich with bacon and tomato, baked with a Mornay sauce ($12.99).
On Sunday, for a special occasion or just because, be sure to head over to the Bristol for its excellent brunch buffet ($13.99).
The Bristol has six locations in the greater Louisville area. The original Bristol that started it all is located at 1321 Bardstown Road; another is located in the historic central business district at 614 W. Main St. The Bristol East is at 300 N. Hurstbourne Parkway, while the one in Prospect is at 6051 Timber Ridge Dr., just off U.S. Highway 42 (Brownsboro Road).
The Jeffersonville, IN, restaurant is at 700 W. Riverside Dr., with one of the best views of Louisville. Tucked into the Speed Art Museum, the Café Bristol is open for lunch only Wednesday through Saturday. The different locations keep different hours, although all but the Café Bristol are open at least by 11 a.m.
