The sounds that emanate from Green Room Coffee sometimes include more than the regular conversational chatter. The whine of an electric guitar, a booming bass and a blast of drum rolls might interrupt customers’ tête-à-tête over cafe au lait at any moment at Green Room Coffee. That’s because the shop is located inside Louisville’s Music-Go-Round, a store that deals in new and used musical instruments and equipment.
Although the noise level is unpredictable, there are no surprises when it comes to the quality of the coffee and the food Green Room serves. The coffee at the Hurstbourne Parkway shop comes from local roasters such as Red Hot Roasters and Sunergos Coffee with many varieties as well as seasonal flavors.
Green Room Coffee also serves homemade soups, gourmet sandwiches and baked goods, with an emphasis on local and Kentucky Proud products such as Great Harvest Bread Co. and Creation Gardens.
As long as the possibility of loud, live, spontaneous music isn’t a turnoff, the café makes a great lunch location, offering free Wi-Fi and a $5 special from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily. Open seven days a week, the shop accepts orders by phone.
One of Green Room Coffee’s signature items is its iced coffee. Instead of dumping cold coffee down the drain, the shop uses it to make ice cubes. These “coffee cubes” keep iced drinks from getting watery.
According to Manager Loren Carlson, the coffee shop was added to Music-Go-Round two years ago to give friends and family something to do while patrons take music lessons, trade in used goods or shop for new items. It also provides a place for the store’s students to hang out before and after music lessons.
