Mai's Thai: Take a Trip to the Other Side of the World
You wouldn't know from its plain brick facade that Mai's Thai in Jeffersonville is home to one of the best places to get Thai food in town. Mai's Thai's unassuming architecture says nothing about the rich aromas and flavors you'll discover once you walk through the restaurant's front door.
The menu at Mai's Thai is perfect, complete enough to offer a variety of choices without being so lengthy that it takes longer to decide what to order than it does to finish the food. If you've never eaten Thai cuisine before, some appetizers will sound familiar: crab rangoon, spring rolls, and dumplings. Others, such as the satay (marinated grilled chicken served with a peanut and cucumber sauce) will challenge you to try something new.
Menu items at Mai's Thai are numbered, so there's no need to be embarrassed if you can't pronounce the name of the entree you want to order—just order it by number instead. Items are grouped by type: noodles, fried rice, stir fry, curry and vegetarian dishes. Each grouping has between four and eight different preparations to choose from within it.
The peppery Khoa Pad Mai Thai is a fried-rice dish with egg, onion, scallions, and mixed vegetables. It's spicy but not hot — the heat coming from the dish's herbs. If you prefer a milder dish, try the Laad Nah, a noodle dish featuring a choice of meat mixed with vegetables and smothered in a flavorful brown gravy.
For dessert, opt for a glass of spicy Thai iced tea, the perfect end to a meal from the other side of the world.
